Model subscription, BYOK API or local model: which fits research work?

These three connection routes have different access, billing and data-flow rules. Check the selected route and document scope before processing a manuscript or dataset.

First distinction: app access and model access are separate

AcademicFix Studio 1.1.1 is a free Windows app; it does not include a model subscription or API credit. You choose an eligible account session, an optional API connection or a running local model. Signing in alone does not prove that a particular model will respond for your account: list an accessible model and run a short real response test.

Access and data-flow comparison for research workflows
RouteWhat you needBilling and limitsWhere content goes
Provider account / subscriptionAn official account route supported by Studio, with eligible plan, permissions and model access. The guide describes ChatGPT account, local Codex and Claude Code routes separately.Subject to the provider's plan and usage limits. Agents sharing an account share its allowance; separate agent calls may consume it. Do not assume a subscription includes API credit.Task context sent to a cloud model is subject to the provider's terms. Check the selected document scope before each message.
Bring-your-own-key APISeparate API/project access, key, suitable model and quota at your chosen provider. Configure Studio's optional connection and test a real response. The API account's current rates apply. Input, output, caching, tools or storage may be billed differently by provider. Keep subscription and API bills separate.Selected task content goes to the API provider. Review key-storage behaviour and that provider's data terms separately.
Local model serverA running Ollama or compatible local server tested in Studio, with an appropriate model and computer hardware. If no cloud API call is made, that model call does not incur a cloud-provider token charge; hardware, power and maintenance still matter. Capability and speed depend on the device.A truly local model can process its model request on the device. Separately enabled web tools or cloud services can still send relevant content outward; a local connection is not an offline guarantee.

Measure API cost from actual calls, not a fixed task price

OpenAI documents separate billing for ChatGPT and its API platform. Anthropic likewise describes Claude subscriptions and Console API access as separate products. Some plans can have specific API credits, so inspect your current plan terms. Gemini API uses separate project, billing and quota tiers. Studio does not automatically switch to a paid API when subscription access reaches a limit.

A single promised price per task is unreliable: model choice, selected document content, conversation history, number of agent calls, output length, caching and tools all vary. For a measurement, log the date, provider/model, work type, input/output/cached tokens when reported, tool charges and the provider's actual usage or invoice record for each call—without logging confidential content. Google's Gemini documentation shows how to read token counts from API response usage fields. Do not present missing usage data as a precise estimate.

This is a measurement template, not an AcademicFix cost benchmark or spending-cap guarantee. Recheck provider pricing and limits before enabling billing.

Four steps for unpublished research

  1. Check your permission and institution or journal policy. Remove unnecessary participant details; do not send files you are not authorised to process to a cloud service.
  2. Inspect Studio's active connection, model and message-level document access. Adding a file alone does not start a model request; selected context can be sent when you start a task or message.
  3. Run a short response test with a nonconfidential synthetic sample. For local models, verify that the server is actually running on your computer and whether the task needs web tools.
  4. Compare the output with the original document, accessed sources and real analysis records. A completed response does not establish scientific validity, source support or acceptance by a journal.

Primary sources and scope

This guide uses official product and provider documentation accessed on 16 October 2026. No fixed prices, plan allowances or quotas are shown because they can change. Read the current data-use terms of your selected provider as well.
